What do Ian Fleming, Albert Brocolli, Desmond Llewelyn, Gert Frobe, Peter LaMont and Ken Adam have in common? If they asked me, I would immediately respond something like James Bond or Goldfinger. And that would be right … but they also have something else in common.

Ian Fleming, best known as the creator of James Bond, also wrote the children’s novel, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” the story of a car that can fly. Albert Brocolli, also known as Cubby is best known as the producer of the Bond films.

Cubby transformed Fleming’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang into one of the best children’s films ever produced. Dick Van Dyke stars, playing Charactacus Potts, a wacky inventor, single dad of two children. When the children discover one of their favorite cars is about to be destroyed, they convince their father to buy it. In the process, he meets Truly Scrumptious, the film’s love interest played by Sally Ann Howes.

Potts rebuilds the old car and the family discovers it has magical abilities; it can hydroplane above the water and even fly.

The villain in the story is Baron Bomburst, played by the late German actor Gert Frobe, best known for his portrayal of the character of Bond’s Goldfinger.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang would make a great gift for any child. The DVD set comes on two disks featuring the film and numerous featurettes. The packaging on the DVD disk set includes a 34-page booklet about the film and a fold out map.
