Raise Your Voice - Follow Your Dreams
Hilary Duff stars as Terri Fletcher in New Line's “Raise Your Voice.” Terri is a young girl whose desire in life is to become a great singer. As a matter of fact, she is great. Her biggest fan is her older brother, who unbeknownst to her, creates a small DVD featurette of her singing and submits it to a prestigious Los Angeles music school.

In a tragic car accident, Terri’s brother is killed and she ends up in the hospital. After his death she is accepted into the music school, and although she feels responsible for her brother's death, she attends the school against her parent’s wishes. She struggles to come to terms with her brother’s death, while struggling to excel at school.

Lauren C. Mayhew, whose story ran two weeks ago, plays Robin, who makes Terri’s life miserable at the school. Lauren told the Alachua County Today, “I’m basically one of the students there, and I’m just downright evil. I decide to thwart her path every way possible. I really get to combine my two loves, which is acting and music. It’s not a musical by any means, but there is a lot of music in it.”

When I asked her about playing a heartless character and how she got along with Hilary, she said, “It’s so funny, because we get along really well. Off the set, we were just friends. It’s so funny just to look at her and be so evil to her and after every scene, I’d just laugh and say ‘sorry, I’m so mean to you right now.’”

Both Lauren and Hilary perform some excellent musical numbers in the film. While some teenagers might misinterpret the film and disobey their parents, it offers a good opportunity to discuss current issues with your teenager. This is a great musical film that encourages teenagers to follow their dreams and overcome obstacles.
