Hilarious British Espionage
In this British spy comedy Rowan Atkinson plays Johnny English, a civil servant who works for MI6, British Secret Intelligence Service. English is such a bumbling blockhead that he blows up British Secret Service men, while dreaming of being like Bond. Instead of being 007, he wants to be agent number one.
English has mastered the ability of covering up his mistakes to such a degree that everyone believes he is the epitome of a super sleuth. After all of the agents are killed, guess who gets to replace them? Johnny English, who knows no fear, no danger, in fact, he knows absolutely nothing.
John Malkovich plays the evil villain, the French and very crafty business magnate, Pascal Sauvage. Sauvage has determined through his line of ancestry all the way to the middle ages, that he should take over the English Throne as the next king. With his henchmen, he approaches the queen, and under gunpoint attempts to force the queen to relinquish the kingdom to him.
In true royal fashion, the queen is willing to die for England, so he takes one of her Welsh Pembroke Corgis and threatens to shoot the dog. Under that threat, she signs the paper and Sauvage is poised to be coronated king of England. Everything is ready to go for the inauguration including stamps and new currency. He has one problem though, Johnny English. "He may be a fool, but he keeps on showing up.”
Joining Johnny English is Lorna Campbell (recording artist Natalie Imbruglia.) Even though English is incredibly goofy, Campbell falls in love with him. Together they save England.
The film has a magnificent soundtrack, reminding me of a Bond film composed by John Barry. As a matter of fact, the whole atmosphere of the entire film is very Bond like. Then on top of that, you’ve got Rowan Atkinson doing the most hilarious version of a secret "Bondian" agent. Several of the scriptwriters (Neal Purvis and Robert Wade) of the film are the same scriptwriters of 007’s latest film "Die Another Day" — no wonder “Johnny English” feels like a Bond film.
“Johnny English” is an absolutely side-splitting comedy, and with a “PG” rating, appropriate for most age groups.
If you like James Bond or you like Mr. Bean, you’d love Johnny English. I see a lot of films, and it takes a lot to make me laugh out loud in the theatre — it has to be truly funny. This film is hilarious.
